John MercierJohn R. Mercier, CFRE

John Mercier has been involved in fundraising for three decades -- as a Development Specialist, CEO and Consultant. After a twenty-five year career with YMCAs across the country, he established the JM Advancement Organization in Essex, Connecticut in 1990 and relocated to Sarasota, Florida in 1991.

A recognized leader in non-profit management and fund raising, John has been particularly involved in hospital and YMCA capital campaigns, fraternal organization consulting and endowment development programs.

His experience includes a major capital campaign for Mid-Coast Hospital, Brunswick, Maine, where $6.1 million was raised on a $4 million goal. Mid-Coast subsequently retained John to assist in the establishment of a new development program.

John also conducted the launch phase for Holy Cross Hospital, in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida, where upon the recent attainment of their five-year goal of $35 million, the goal has been increased to $40 million. He has recently completed the launch phase for a $40 million campaign for Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Buffalo, NY for a new Research Center for Cancer Genetics and Pharmacology and the establishment of Endowed Chairs and Targeted Endowment Funds.

John Mercier’s career includes six years of service with the YMCA of Buffalo & Erie County, where he was Associate General Executive (Operations) and Director of Community Relations. He later became President & CEO of the YMCA of Greater Waterbury, Connecticut and Vice President for Operations, Programs & Membership for the YMCA of Greater New York.

A graduate of Clark University, Worcester, MA, he is a Founding Member and currently serves as Chair of the Association of Philanthropic Counsel (APC). He is a longtime member of the Association of Fundraising Professionals and was a Charter Member of the Connecticut Chapter. In 1986, he achieved the designation of Certified Fundraising Executive (CFRE), and he was also one of a handful recognized as an Annual Support Trainer by the North American YMCA Development Officers. He has also recently served on the Board of the Southwest Florida AFP Chapter.
